The Study of the Smoking Knowledge Attitudes and Experiences Among Boys¢¥ High School Students


Abstract
The purpose of.-this study was to investigate the smoking knowledge, attitudes and experiences among boys¢¥ high school students.
The subjects for this study was 380 boys in a high school located in suwon. Data was collected during from the 12th, 14th December, 1992 by questionnaire and was analyzed using descriptive statistics, X2 -test.
The results of this study was summarized as follows ;
1. The total 380 students was composed of 188 1st-grade students, 192 2nd-grade students. Among 380 students, smoking students of 2nd-grade (15.6%) was more than 1st-grade (8.0%) (p<0.01). Group of stopping smoking was 1st-grade (27.1%). 2nd-grade (33.9%) students.
2. The degree of knowledge with respect to the smoking harmfulness was followed. Harmfulness to health (94.7%), harmfulness of fetus affect from pregnant women¢¥s smoking (96.1%), harmfulness of passive smoking (95.5%), causing to lung cancer (84.7%), chronic bronchitis (78.9%), harmfulness of adolescents (75.5%). causing to shortening of the span of life (73.4%), causing to peripheral vascular diseases due to arteriosclerosis (52.9%), causing to heart. diseases (34.7%), causing to gastric ulcer (33.9%).
3. The degree of negative attitude related to smoking was followed. Women¢¥s smoking
younger brother¢¥s smoking (84.5%), father¢¥s smoking (74.2%), high school student¢¥s smoking (65.8%), men¢¥s smoking (40.2%), teacher¢¥s smoking (33.9%), smoking scene in -TV, movie (13.4%).
4. The beginning time of smoking of 1st-grade than 2nd-grade in present smoking groups was more earlier (p=0.0020* *). The effort to smoking cessation (68.9%).
5. As regards general characteristics related to smoking states : In present smoking groups
than non smoking : mother¢¥s poor school ca-rrier (p=0.029*), the negative attitude to parents (p=0.000***), lower satisfaction of school living (p=0.000***), more amount of monthly spending money (p=0.001**), poor school record (p=0.000***), having smoking friend (p=0_000***)
6. Knowledge of smoking was poor in smoking group than non-smoking group : Causing lung cancer (p=0.006**), causing heart disease (p=0.004* *), causing gastric ulcer (p= 0.001**), causing shortage of the span of life (p=0.000***), harmfulness to Adolescent¢¥s smoking (p=0.001**), harmfulness of passive smoking (p=0.012*), causing to peripheral vascular diseases due to arteriosclerosis (p=0.001**).
7. The attitude to smoking was more tolerate in smoking group than non-smoking group teachers¢¥ smoking (p=0.000***), high school students¢¥ smoking (p=0_000***), female¢¥s smoking (p=0.000***), male¢¥s smoking (p=0.000***), father¢¥s smoking (p=0.000***). smoking scene in movie, IV (p=0.006**), younger brother¢¥s smoking (p=0.044*), movement of smoking cessation (p=0.000***), appointment of smoking district in the public place (p=0.000***), school¢¥s restraint to smoking (p=0.000* * * ), including education program for smoking cessation in curriculum (p=0.003**).
As a results. it is a needed for family, school, society and government to strive to prevent adolescent¢¥s smoking, to increase smoking cessation effectively and actively.
